Betsuni: Meaning in Japanese | 別に

<div>betsuni is one of those words you're sort of forced to hear in anime. Every must be fluent in betsuni before getting their license, and every bored character  must be able to say betsuni in answer to practically every question in order to show how much he doesn't care about things. But wait... are these two betsuni the same betsuni? What does betsuni mean in Japanese?

Betsuni ...nai (Adverb + Negative)</h2>

The most common use of betsuni is in negative phrases, so we'll start with them. Note that betsuni means something else in affirmative phrases (because Japanese hates you), but that usage is a little rarer so I'll explain that one further below.

 

Anyway, in a negative phrase, betsuni means "it doesn't make a difference," "it doesn't matter," "not particularly," "not really." Examples:

<li>betsuni suki janai! 別に好きじゃない！ [I do] not particularly like [you]! It's not like I like you or anything!</li>
<li>betsuni kirai janai 別に嫌いじゃない！ [I do] not particularly hate [it]! I don't really hate it or anything!</li>
<li>betsuni kamawanai 別に構わない [I do] not particularly care. Fine.</li>
<li>betsuni hoshikunai 別に欲しくない [I do] not particularly want [it]. It's not like I want it or anything! You can have. Take it. Keep it. I don't care.</li>

Betsuni... nakutemo 別に～なくても</h3>

When you have the structure betsuni... nakutemo, the whole things means "even if [you do] not particularly [do X, Y will happen.]" That is, someone's actions are inconsequential, meaningless, a waste of time. "You don't need to do this."
<ul>
<li>betsuni okoranakutemo 別に怒らなくても Even if [you do] not particularly get angry [about it.] (you can solve the problem) You don't need to get mad because of it. It's nothing to fuss about.</li>
<li>betsuni korosanakutemo 別に殺さなくても Even if [you do] not particularly kill [him.] (you can solve the problem) You don't need to kill him, though I don't really care if you do.</li>
<li>betsuni ayamaranakutemo 別に謝らなくても Even if [you do] not particularly apologize. (the problem will be solved) There's no need for apologies, it's alright, I forgive you. Actually, it wasn't even something to apologize about. Actually, I've already forgotten about it long ago, don't worry about it. No need to bring up the past.</li>
<li>betsuni shiranakutemo 別に知らなくても You don't need to know about it.</li>
<li>betsuni wakaranakutemo 別に分からなくても You don't need to understand it.</li>

Tokuni... 特に</h3>

The word tokuni 特に means "importantly," and "importantly" and "particularly" are sort alike, likewise, betsuni is like tokuni when the phrase is negative. See:

Betsuni... masen 別に～ません</h3>
nai negative, but this kind of betsuni also works with the polite <a href="http://www.japanesewithanime.com/2017/02/masu-mashita-meaning.html">masen</a>. For example:The examples above are using thenegative, but this kind ofalso works with the polite. For example:<ul>
<li>betsu ni kamaimasen 別に構いません I don't (particularly) mind.</li>
<li>betsu ni kiken dewa arimasen 別に危険じゃありません It's not (particularly) dangerous.</li>

Betsuni (exclamation)</h2>

Next we have betsuni as an exclamation. This is also a very common use. Most of the time betsuni appears alone in a phrase, as a short answer, it's the exclamation, and this betsuni means: "I have no strong feelings one way or the other." Literally.

 

Note that, however, betsuni is often translated as just "not really," because people normally ask one-sided questions, not two-sided questions (I'm making these names up). To elaborate:

<li>Do you like X? (one-sided) Not really. (betsuni)</li>
<li>Do you hate X? (one-sided) Not really. (betsuni)</li>
<li>What do you think about X? (two-sided) I neither like it nor hate it. (betsuni)</li>
</ul>

 

Some more examples:

As you can clearly see above, this word is annoying as hell. Just talk! Use words, damnit! Is betsuni all you can say?!

Betsu ni (Noun-Adverb) </h2>

Now we got to betsuni with an affirmative. The least used betsuni. What's happening is that, in this case, it's more like betsu ni than betsuni. That is, it's not really an adverb, it's a noun turned into an adverb.

 

The noun betsu means "separate," "different than this one" or "other than this one." Let's start with an example of it being used alone:

<li>neru you no beddo wa betsu ni aru 寝る用のベッドは別にある A bed for sleeping other than this one exists. There is another bed for sleeping. </li>
<li>betsu ni iken ga aru 別に意見がある There is an opinion for something else. I have a different opinion about this.</li>
</ul>

 

Above we have betsu by itself, without an adjective. Another case is when betsu has an adjective behind of it. So a phrase like X betsu becomes "each of X" or "X separately." Example:

<li>iro betsu ni seirisuru 色別に整理する To organize by the separation of colors. To organize by separated colors. To organize by each color. To organize by colors separately.</li>
<li>gakunen betsu kanji haitouhyou 学年別漢字配当表 List of kanji distributed by each school year. List of kanji separated by school year. (this is a list of which kanji students learn at which year in school)</li>

Betsuni... nai without nai</h2>

So now we have seen the betsuni...nai which means "not particularly" and that weird noun-adverb hybrid that was betsu ni. Next we're going to see the first betsuni, again, but this time without the nai.
<ul>
<li>betsu ni daijoubu desu 別に大丈夫です It's nothing in particular, I'm alright.</li>
</ul>

Now, you may notice the phrase above makes no sense. I'll be honest. It doesn't. Don't even try to understand how it makes sense: it does not make sense. It'll never make sense. You can twist your brains for hours and you'll never be able to figure out how and why it means what it means, because, it's not supposed to mean that.

 

That's right. That, above, is a native Japanese speaker exercising their right to fuck up their own language by screwing up the grammar and using words in ways they aren't supposed to according to the dictionary but they do it anyway because fuck it, it's their language they do what they want.

 

Basically, because the negative betsuni is far more common than the positive betsuni, people end up using the negative meaning without a negative phrase. (oh the humanity!).

 
betsuni. Because you don't really pay attention to these things, you just use words naturally. Since they haven't realize they have been using it with a negative phrase, surely they wouldn't think it's a requirement. And so, sometimes, the negative meaning of betsuni shows up in affirmative phrases instead. Not because it should, but because it kinda feels right.

...betsuni ～別に</h3>


Sometimes this kind of adverbial betsuni will end up at the end of a phrase. For example:

<li>sore wa betsuni それは別に That [is not] particularly... (what?)</li>
</ul>

 

This can happen for two reasons.

 

First, whatever comes after betsuni is implicit. That is, someone might have said "it's going to cost a lot," and you say betsuni, it means that costing a lot isn't something you care about. It doesn't matter.

 

Second, it could be that what comes after betsuni is actually behind betsuni, at the start of the phrase.. So you're betsuni'ng yourself: "it's going to cost a lot, but betsuni (I don't care)."
It could be that they didn't notice, haven't realized, that they always use a negative phrase with the negative. Because you don't really pay attention to these things, you just use words naturally. Since they haven't realize they have been using it with a negative phrase, surely they wouldn't think it's a requirement. And so, sometimes, the negative meaning ofshows up in affirmative phrases instead. Not because it should, but because it kinda feels right.<h2 id="betsuni-ii">
Betsuni ii 別にいい</h2>

Alright, now we've reached the worst monster of the article: betsuni ii 別にいい. At first glance it doesn't look so bad, after all, come on, it's just two words, right? How bad can it be?

 

It makes natives ask questions about its usage levels of bad.

 

There are, like, a dozen problems with this phrase. Let's start with the biggest problem: ii いい.

<li>iindesu いいんです It's good. (I'll take it.) I'm fine. (I don't need it.)</li>
</ul>

 

Okay, what the actual fuck. Who makes these words? Who decides these meanings? What kind of moron thought it was a good idea, to have one phrase, mean opposite things? What kind of bullshit is this? We haven't even reached the betsuni part yet and it's already this fucked up.
<ul>
<li>betsuni iindesukedo 別にいいんですでこ betsuni iindesu 別にいいんです betsuni ii 別にいい It's alright. Who cares.</li>
</ul>

 
Okay, so, above, we have betsuni ii. The problem: this is the negative meaning of betsuni, used in an affirmative phrase. It's saying you don't particularly care if it's good or not. Whatever. However, as we can see, there is no nai up there. The phrase is affirmative.

 

If it were to work the right way, as if we can call that, it would have been: betsuni yokunai? 別によくない？ But that's not the same thing at all!!! That's just how exceptionally weird the phrase betsuni ii is. It combines a number of things that are difficult to understand in Japanese.

 

And there's more. See:

The above is not the negative betsuni either! It's the pseudo-negative betsuni plus a negative question. That is, you're not going to put the nai where you ought to put it (yokunai), but somewhere else it's alright (janai)?! What?!

 

BUT IT DOESN'T STOP THERE.

So, basically, you may need to scroll up. Remember the example: betsu ni iken ga aru 別に意見がある, which means "to have an opinion for something else?" It's what we see here.

 

The first betsuni ii is saying: pfft, I do not particularly care (betsuni) for one way or another. What you just said sounds good (ii) enough.

 

The second betsu ni ii is saying: I think your idea is bad. Meanwhile, I think a different, other (betsu) idea I'm aware of is good (ii).

 

So say you're in a business meeting and after giving a business proposal you get this business answer: betsuni ii. What does that mean? What does this guy mean? Does he mean he likes my idea? He's fine with my idea? My proposal? Can I do this? Or is he talking about the other idea? Which the other guy proposed? W-what the fuck? What do I do now?

betsuni 別に is written with <a></a>betsu 別 plus the ni に suffix that makes it an adverb. betsubetsuni 別別に (or 別<a></a>betsuni with an extra layer of that delicious betsu. It has nothing to do with betsuni, it comes from the noun betsubetsu which means many things becoming "separated" one from the other.The word別別に (or 別 <a href="http://www.japanesewithanime.com/2017/03/repetition-kanji-meaning-noma-kurikaeshi.html">々</a> に) is, obviously,with an extra layer of that delicious. It has nothing to do with, it comes from the nounwhich means many things becoming "separated" one from the other.<ul>

The phrase betsu desu, and very much any other way that says something is betsu, that is, it's not the same, not what it was thought to be, it's something else.

The phrase betsu toshite means literately "to treat separately," and is used to exclude something from consideration.

 

Another way to think of it: betsu to shite, betsu ni shite, betsu ni suru, "to make [something] into something else." If it's something else (it's betsu), it's apart from what I'm talking about right now.

Juuni Taisen: Warrior Taglines

<div>Juuni Taisen 十二大戦, "the great battle of twelve [warriors]," and one cool thing about this anime is that every warrior has a different way of killing, and that way of killing gets an immense tagline on screen. 
 
Each tagline tells what a character is about, but some subtitles' translations have taken some huge liberties in translating the taglines from Japanese, so watchers end up associating phrases to characters that the original author didn't intend for people to associate. 
 
In this post, I'll write the original Japanese taglines and some very literal translations, and explain how the Japanese works and their actual meanings in English like chewing and putting in mouth in a way easy to understand.

Rat</h2>

ujauja korosu うじゃうじゃ殺す 
To kill tediously. 
To kill swarming.

 

The rat just sort of doesn't feel like doing anything. You can see how bored he is. He naps instead of listening, plays video-games during a battle royale, etc. 
 
This adverb also has another meaning: nezumi ga ujauja iru ネズミがうじゃうじゃいる means "rats are [here] swarming." The English word "swarm" is used more toward insects flying, but this ujauja swarm is used more toward swarms of worms and small animals on the ground.

Ox</h2>

tada korosu ただ殺す

To kill simply.

 

Unlike other warriors, the Ox warrior "just kills," tada korosu. He has no quirks. He just kills. That's why he's the best at killing: he just kills, simply like that, he doesn't waste time and effort with weird gimmicks or whatever.

Tiger</h2>

yotta ikioi de korosu 酔った勢いで殺す

To kill with drunk vigor.

 

The particle de marks a modifier for an action. The word ikioi means "force," "vigor." The "momentum" to go at things (in this case, to go killing). The word yotta comes from the verb you 酔う, meaning "to get drunk." In other words, to kill with the vigor of someone who's drunk.

 

An added joke: tora 虎, "tiger," is also a slang for "drunkard" in Japanese.

Rabbit</h2>

ijouni korosu 異常に殺す

To kill abnormally.

 

The word ijouni is the adverb version of ijou 異常, which is written with the kanji for "different" and "normal." What's different than normal? Abnormal. He kills in an abnormal way, he kills "abnormally."

 

I mean he's an almost naked, muscular guy, dual-wielding machetes, jumping around in high-heels, there's hardly something more abnormal than this.

Dragon & Snake</h2>

asobu kane hoshisani korosu 遊ぶ金欲しさに殺す 
To kill for the wantedness of money to play.

 
kane means "money." The verb asobu, "to play." When a verb is behind a noun like in asobu kane it becomes adjective clause: asobu kane, "money to play" or "playing money," money that is playing. 
 
The word hoshisa is a bit more complicated. It comes from the adjective hoshii 欲しい, which means "wanted [by me]." In Japanese, a phrase like X ga hoshii means literally "X [is] wanted [by me]," but that very sounds stupid in English, so instead we normally just translate it as "[I] want X." 
 
The sa suffix would turn something like kanashii 悲しい, "sad," into kanashisa 悲しさ, "sadness." Or nagai 長い, "long," into nagasa 長さ, "longness," "length." So "wanted," would become "wantedness." (see, it's in the dictionary: <a></a>The wordmeans "money." The verb, "to play." When a verb is behind a noun like init becomes adjective clause:, "money to play" or "playing money," money that is playing.The wordis a bit more complicated. It comes from the adjective欲しい, which means "wanted [by me]." Anyway, it basically means they kill for money, and want money to play around. (and yes, both characters have the same tagline).

Horse</h2>

mugon de korosu 無言で殺す

To kill mutely.

 

The word mugon is written with the kanji for nothingness (無) and speech (言), that is, "no speech." Literally. You may find it translated as "silently" somewhere else, but that sort of gives the impression he doesn't make any sound at all. This isn't the case. He just doesn't speak.

 

The character is kind of non-verbal. Apparently doesn't speak much, and few people have heard his voice (according to his character profile). Hence the tagline.

Sheep</h2>

damashite korosu 騙して殺す

To kill deceiving.

 

The word damashite is the te-form of the verb damasu 騙す, meaning "to trick," "to deceive."

 

As a bomb user, this warrior has always killed people by tricking them into stepping in the blast radius. (But in this case, who's really sheep?)

Monkey</h2>

heiwarini korosu 平和裏に殺す

To kill while in peace.

 
heiwa means "peace." The word ri 裏 is rather rare, it means "while in the condition or state of." So hewari means "the state of being in peace" as a noun, and heiwarini is the adverb version of it, to do "while in peace."

The reason this word was chosen for this character is probably because of the phrase heiwarini kaiketsu suru 平和裏に解決する, "to settle [a diplomatic problem] while in peace," that is, without going to war to settle it.

Chicken</h2>

tsuibande korosu 啄んで殺す

To kill pecking.

 

The word tsuibande is the te-form of the verb tsuibamu 啄む, "to peck."

 

I don't really have anything else to say about this.

Dog</h2>

kande fukumeru youni korosu 噛んで含めるように殺す

To kill like chewing and putting in mouth.

To kill explaining in an easy-to-understand way.

 

This one is tricky because it's about an idiom. The word kande is the te-form of the verb kamu 噛む, meaning "to bite" or "to chew." The verb fukumeru means a number of things, one of them being "putting [something] in mouth." And youni means "like" or "as if" or "in similar way," etc.

 

So, the first idea, most literal, is that you chew something and then put it in someone else's mouth. Since it's already in your mouth, there'd be no point of the verb fukumeru there if it was supposed to go into your mouth again, so it's really in someone else's mouth. Why would anyone do this? Is this some sort of sick fetish people have? Are they playing birds? Yeah, no, sort of.

 

The second meaning, based on the above, means to explain something to someone else in a very detailed, easy-to-understand way. Why? Because parents taking (complicated) food and chewing it (making it simpler) then feeding (explaining) it to their children is what the phrase is about.

 

This warriors bites. And seems to like overexplaining things.

Boar</h2>

The word yutaka means to have something in abundance. Most of the time, it means to be wealthy, rich, since there's an abundance of money, but it can also means abundances of other things. Since in the phrase it's being used as an adverb, yutakani, it's "abundantly."

 

The boar is both rich and carries two Gatling guns to make sure everything she kills she kills so abundantly killed even their ghost is killed. Her targets are burdened with an overabundance of death.

Masaka: Meaning in Japanese | まさか

<div>masaka means "it can't be," right? Or "could it be," right? That's its meaning, right? That what masaka means in Japanese, right? I mean, doesn't actually mean "impossible!" So... could it be that... masaka...?!

masaka doesn't literally mean "it can't be." That makes no sense. The phrase "it can't be" has a pronoun, an auxiliary verb, and a copulative verb. That's too much stuff for a single word to represent. Although, to be honest, you can translate masaka as "could it be" and be correct half of the time, even if it sounds a little weird.

Basically, masaka means "unexpected." In a sense. We wouldn't use the word "unexpected" in English the way we'd use the word masaka in Japanese. And, masaka can be a noun, an adjective and an adverb. But the core idea is that masaka refers to something unexpected..

 

What masaka means, exactly, would be: something you don't expect and would take you by surprise if it happened, probably (but not necessarily) putting you into an urgent situation that forces you to make decisions and change plans.

 

Note that masaka isn't always about things that are literally impossible or that never crossed your mind. It can be something you thought could maybe happen, but there was a very small chance (it rarely happens, probably won't happen, so you don't expect it to happen), or you simply don't want for it happen. (you expect something good to happen, you don't expect something bad to happen, and you don't expect the worse possible scenario to come true).

 

The word masaka is not "there's no way!", it's the thing that would make you say "there's no way!"

 

By the way, to say just "unexpected" in Japanese, the word would be igai 意外.

Masaka...?! (adverb)</h2>

Let's see some examples. Imagine something unexpected happened. A character, concerned, says: masaka...?!

 

That's an adverb.

 

It doesn't look like an adverb, because, just like saying "what the...?!", it's missing the rest of the phrase. See:

Another way masaka is used as an adverb with a negative phrase is to say something will never happen no matter what. It's honestly impossible. See:

<li>masaka ienai まさか言えない I didn't expect I can't say it. (I thought I'd be able to, but I couldn't, I was wrong and therefore we can assume it's impossible for me to)</li>

Nest we have masaka. A noun.

 

Now you might be thinking: what the hell is the difference between this and the above?! Well, little. Basically, if there's a comma or dot after the masaka, then it's a probably a noun. When it's a noun, it can be translated as "of course not!" or "I can't believe it!" depending on the situation. Example:

Sono masaka!!! (noun)</h2>

masaka, you can reaffirm the masaka really masaka'ed by using the demonstrative adjective <a href="http://www.japanesewithanime.com/2016/10/kono-sono-ano-dono-meaning.html">sono</a> to specifically emphasize the masaka that just masaka'ed.Sometimes, after someone says, you can reaffirm thereally'ed by using the demonstrative adjectiveto specifically emphasize thethat just'ed.
 

Here's an example of sono masaka:

As we can see above, it's taking a ridiculous amount of effort for me to keep the word "unexpected" in the translations. You just don't translate this word, you just write something else, like:

Masaka no...?! (adjective)</h2>


This one is a bit rare in anime, but it exists. When you turn masaka into an adjective through the no particle, masaka no, you're describing something which is unexpected and you'd be caught by surprise if it were true or occurred.

 

Often, this means something unexpected and bad happened. An emergency. And you would be asked "if masaka no ... happened, what would you do?" The phrases below can also be used to say that masaka no ... HAS happened.
<ul>
<li>masaka no toki まさかの時 The most unexpected time. (a time that always catches you by surprise) An emergency. Urgency. The time of need.</li>
<li>masaka no baai まさかの場合 The most unexpected situation. A situation of emergency.</li>
<li>masaka no jiko まさかの事故 The most unexpected accident. An emergency with victims, probably.</li>
</ul>

 

Basically:

<li>masaka ga okoru mae ni risuku wo yobou suru まさかが起こる前にリスクを予防する Before the unexpected happens, prevent the risks.</li>

Besides the above, the phrase masaka no... can also be used to state things that you didn't expect to happen but happened and have caught you by surprise, and, maybe, they weren't bad things, they were just surprising things, or even pleasant things. It's just that you thought they were super rare and wouldn't happen.

masaka can be written with <a></a>masaka まさか. But it technically has a kanji version, too: masaka 真逆.One last thing,can be written with <a href="http://www.japanesewithanime.com/2016/08/japanese-alphabet-hiragana-katakana-kanji.html">hiragana or kanji</a> . It's often written with hiragana:まさか. But it technically has a kanji version, too:真逆.
 
masaka 真逆 are "true" (ma 真 of <a></a>saka 逆, of Sakasama no Patema 逆様のパテマ, "Patema Inverted/Upside Down").The kanji of真逆 are "true" (真 of <a href="http://www.japanesewithanime.com/2017/03/masshiro-makkuro-makka-massao.html">masshiro</a> 真っ白, "true/pure white") and "reverse" or "opposite" (逆, of逆様のパテマ, "Patema Inverted/Upside Down").
 

This could be because something masaka is "truly the opposite" of what you'd expect, but that's just me trying hard to explain the kanji. Could also mean nothing.

Bakana! Meaning in Japanese | バカな！

<div>B-b-b-bakana!!! "impossible!!!", "it can't be!!!" The word bakana doesn't actually mean those things I just said? Even though people always translate bakana! as "impossible!" and so on? Bakana! If the word bakana doesn't mean that, then what does bakana mean in Japanese?! 
 
<a></a>bakana is an unthinkable one: it's the word <a></a><a></a>na な, which creates adjectives. So it isn't even one word. It's two words. 
 
Baka na! How can that be?! The word bakana has literally nothing to do with "stupid." It means "impossible" for kamisama's sake! What kind of arcane Japanese language trickery is going on here? 
 
It's nothing so mysterious. Bakana! or, rather, baka na バカな, is a phrase cut short. Since the na particle turned baka into an adjective, there should be a noun for it to describe. But where is the noun? Normally it'd be in front of it: baka na something, a "stupid" something. But this something wasn't said. It's like saying "what the...!" Well, what the what? What goes after the "the"? 
 
In the case of baka na, it's probably this:

<li>baka na koto! バカなこと！ Stupid thing! Stupid idea! Stupid action [you've taken]! Foolish! Non-sense!</li>

Likewise:
