Nyotaika 女体化

<div>nyotaika 女体化 is the term used for scenarios in manga, anime, and fiction, where a male character turns into a woman. That is, it's a gender-bending term.

Explanation</h2>
Literally, the word is composed of the <a></a>onna 女, "body," karada 体, and the suffix for "transforming," ~ka ～化. So woman-body-fication, or something like that. 
 
Note that the <a></a> reading, nyo 女, and not the usual on'yomi reading, jo 女, which you'd find in words like "girl," shoujo 少女, and "female," josei 女性. 
 
That's to say it's definitely not read as jotaika, given that the word nyotaika comes from the word nyotai 女体, meaning "woman's body." 
 
Finally, the suffix is also found in the verb bakeru 化ける, meaning "to transform into (something)," and it's related to monsters, bakemono 化け物, which are animals, plants or things that transform into people.

Incidence in Anime</h2>

Usually, an anime which features gender-bending, or "gender-switching," seitenkan 性転換, which is also the word used for real-life "sex-change," features a man turning into a woman, or a boy turning into a girl, so a nyotaika scenario.

 
nyotaika, it's only nyotaika if the character physically changes sexes. It has nothing to do with his appearance. A <a></a>nyotaika either. And a guy who plays a girl online, a <a></a>This should go without saying, but crossdressing isn't the same thing as, it's onlyif the character physically changes sexes. It has nothing to do with his appearance. A <a href="http://www.japanesewithanime.com/2018/02/trap-in-japanese.html">trap</a> character isn'teither. And a guy who plays a girl online, a <a href="http://www.japanesewithanime.com/2018/02/nekama-meaning.html">nekama ネカマ</a> , may or may not count as a gender-bender depending on the situation and whom you ask.
 

The method by which the characters turns female does not matter. It can be magic, science, or... or... I don't know, how else would that happen? It's just... magic or science isn't it? Anyway, it's all nyotaika.

 

For some reason, such gender-bender theme is a recurring trope in anime. There have been a number of works whose main point is literally the gender-bending factor.

Nantaika 男体化</h2>

The term nantaika 男体化 refers to gender-bending scenarios where a women turns into a man, girls into boys, female to male, you get it. It's the reverse situation of nyotaika 女体化.

 

Since nyotaika is literally woman-body-fication, it can only be used for situation where a guy turns into a girl. That's why the counterpart word nantaika exists, for the elusive man-body-fication scenarios.

 

It's worth noting that nantaika is a much rarer scenario in manga and anime by comparison.

Of course, this suffix ka 化 can also be used in stuff that has nothing to do with anime. For example, kyouka 強化, just means "strengthening," that is, turning "strong," tsuyoi 強い. Alright, that example totally has something to do with anime, but you get the idea.

Newhalf ニューハーフ

<div>Yuu☆Yuu☆Hakusho 幽☆遊☆白書, some random girls, background characters, see a protagonist, Kurama 蔵馬, who's male, and mistake him for another character's girlfriend due to his appearance, going as far as calling him a "newhalf," or nyuuhaafu ニューハーフ, which is a transgender term. 
 
Anyway I wanted to put that scene from the manga in this post but turns out it only happened in the anime :/ 
 
So here's a couple of newhalf instead.

Taboo Word</h3>
For one, there are characters in anime which openly say "I'm a newhalf" in Japanese. But this dialogue would never get translated as "I'm a shemale" in English, due to the association of the term with the sex-industry. Instead, it would be translated as "I'm transgender" given that's more politically correct. 
 
Note that there are differences between "newhalf" and "transgender" too. They're written further below.

Sexual Image</h3>
For two, as far as the sex-industry is concerned, sex sells. So when one thinks of pornography, one thinks of big-boobed women and Photoshop expertise. The word shemale, then, is more associated with the image of a sex-selling big-boobed transgender woman. The same isn't assumed for the term newhalf. 
 
This isn't to say newhalf porn doesn't exist the same way shemale porn exists, of course it exists (for details, see Rule 34), but the term newhalf isn't strictly associated with the sex-industry, it's also associated with beauty contests and TV personalities. So newhalf is associated more with a woman who happens to be transgender, or with a crossdresser who is transgender.

Note that just because they don't want to be called a "newhalf" that doesn't mean nobody is going to call them that. Sure, for someone who is transgender, or concerned about transgender issues, they'd be aware of this, but the average person doesn't know this. So they'll see a person who looks like a newhalf they saw on TV, they'll just say "hey, that's a newhalf!" 
 
There are even cases of self-proclaimed newhalf that identify as male, making them practically gay <a></a> 
 
To make matters worse, because the average person only knows about these "newhalf" they saw on TV, transgender women who do not think they're a "newhalf" may end up in situations they have to say they're a newhalf, or something like a newhalf, in order to get their point across.

This is an over-implication, sure. The truth is that what people think a newhalf is and what people think an okama is varies too much. It's hard to define. If we were to go by stereotypes, it's like comparing a shemale to a drag-queen. 
 
In any case, okama is generally considered more offensive than the term newhalf, because of its historic usage as a slur toward male transvestites and prostitutes. Even when used inoffensively, okama may refer to any man who doesn't act like a man, transgender or not, gay or not. 
 
Some say an okama wants to become a newhalf, implying newhalf would be a next stage. That is, something like this: man-okama-newhalf-woman. There is, obviously, a number of things wrong with this idea, but it's the perception some people have. 
 
It also reminds me of the anime Kaichou wa Meido-Sama, and of some stuff I've heard about 50 Shades of Grey. Specifically: the difference between hot and creepy is whether the guy looks good (and is rich) or not. Likewise, if you took an okama character, and instead of making them an strangely muscular, bearded man, dressed in pink, you gave them a more androgynous-looking body, suddenly it's not an okama anymore it's a newhalf. 
 
To some people, okama and newhalf are interchangeable when talking about transgender women, in which case they'll choose newhalf all the time, given the assumption okama is more offensive. 
 
(wait, is this the end? No more differences? No more comparisons? We done here? Arigatou kamisama! This was a tough battle but with the power of of perseverance we've persevered. My post here is done. To think a single word would have to be compared against four different words... sasuga da na...)

Newhalf Characters</h2>

There are extremely few newhalf characters in fiction, for obvious reasons. There's not much point in making a character a newhalf, at all. Not to mention it's a touchy topic you don't want to touch even with a ten-foot pole. Why go through the trouble?

 

As far as I know, the following characters are newhalf:

<li>Momoko from Shangri-La.</li>
<li>Miiko from Shangri-La</li>
</ol>

 

That's seriously it. Besides these, here are some other examples of transgender characters which may or may not be newhalf. I say may or may not because I'm not sure if they are ever canonically identified as newhalf, so they may just be transgender.

<li>Hana from Tokyo Godfathers (works in an okama bar)</li>
<li>Ranka from Ouran High School Host Club (works in an okama bar)</li>

<a></a>On top of that, there's the infamous case of Poison from Final Fight and Street Fighter. Poison is a newhalf... sometimes. She was originally a woman, but then the company making Final Fight was told beating a woman was <a href="http://www.japanesewithanime.com/2017/11/NG-japanese-meaning.html">NG</a> in America, so they decided to make her a man instead. Translation: beating a woman is wrong, beating a trans woman is alright.
 

Personally, I don't think it counts as a genuine newhalf character since it's an attribute born out of censorship. And if things weren't awkward enough, Poison became officially newhalf and then officially woman and officially newhalf again over and over in different occasions through the years, which makes that part of the character even more meaningless.

Obviously, newhalf is English. I mean, you'd have to have a couple loose screws not to see this:

But the term isn't English-English, it's a Japanese word made from English words, a <a></a>

Using your brilliant criminal-investigation meitantei 名探偵 skills you've acquired from binging Hyouka, you put together the pieces of the puzzle wrapped in an enigma to reveal the answer, uncover The Truth™, protect the world from devastation, unite all peoples within our nation: indeed, as we all known, humans are a type of animal whose sexual reproduction takes the form of anisogamy, meaning we have two sexes, and each sex is responsible of producing one type of gamete. The fusion of these two different gametes gives birth to a zygote, which is then gestated to become offspring. Furthermore, the word half refers to a single part of a whole which has been divided into two parts. Given the existence of two, and only two human sexes, if one were to divide all human sexes in two, that is, divided the whole of human sexes in two halves, one would see that one sex is one half of the two sexes humans have. HOWEVER!!! The notion that we only have two sexes is merely established upon the preexisting knowledge of the fact. Were a third sex to come to existence, the whole premise would crumble into nothingness. The halves would become thirds. Unless... UNLESS!!!!1 We were to preserve the previous notion of two halves due to traditionality, as it's been historically regarded as so, or due to the statistically insignificant effect of this new development. Below is how the term "newhalf" was coined, apparently. 
 
The term haafu ハーフ, the katakanization of "half," is sometimes used to refer to a child of a Japanese person and a gaijin 外人, a "foreigner." So half-Japanese, half-American, for example. 
 
In 1980, in a radio program in Osaka, in a pub called "Betty's Mayonnaise," Bethi no Mayoneezu ベティのマヨネーズ, Betty would say they were "a half of man and woman," otoko to onna no haafu yo 男と女のハーフよ, and Kuwata Keisuke 桑田佳祐, hearing this, would say "then it's a newhalf," jaa nyuuhafu da ne じゃあニューハーフだね. 
 
From then on, in 1981, Kuwata would ask which country's "half" were Betty from, that is, saying they were "half-japanese half-what?" And Betty would keep answering "half man half woman." This way, they'd keep selling her personality as a "newhalf" in the radio program.

Spread</h3>
In 1981, there was a certain beauty contest called Roppongi Bijin 六本木美人. This contest generated a lot of discussion because the winner, Matsubara Rumiko 松原留美子, was actually a man. Ironically, she's been quoted saying:

If it were "Roppongi's bijo" I wouldn't be able to enter [the contest] but, if it's "bijin" then even I who am a man is alright I thought.</li>

In the quote above, Matsubara is talking about how the name of the contest had the word bijin 美人, literally "beautiful person" in it, and not bijo 美女, literally "beautiful woman." That is, if the contest was literally for "women" only, Matsubara, who is a man, would've thought she doesn't meet the criteria. But if it's bijin 美人, it's literally "beautiful person," and has nothing about gender in it, so it would be alright. 
 
(this is a level of pedantry that is normally only found in comments on the internet.)

 

Note, however, that although the word bijin is literally "beautiful person," it's in practice used to refer women mostly. As an analogy, it would be like if the contest was called "Roppongi's Beauties," and a man entered then pedantically mentioned the title didn't say it was about women only.

 

At the time, stuff like hormone therapy, sex-reassignment surgery, and even cosmetic surgery wasn't something people knew about or that transgender people got. So Matsubara was literally just a crossdresser with a naturally androgynous body. Because of this, the idea of a newhalf became the idea of a man who passes as a woman.

Crossdressing in Japanese

Let's start with josou 女装, since josou is the most common crossdressing case. The word josou means "crossdresssing," specifically, men crossdressing, guys wearing female clothes, guys dressing up like girls, etc.

 

In anime, this normally happens for no good reason. Some manga have dedicated chapters and chapters to constructing the mishap that leads to a male character to unwillingly crossdress in a grand plan to appease their crossdressing-hungry fanbase

 

In some, not any better, cases, characters are crossdressing right from the start, sometimes just because they wanted attention, which lead to a lot of drama discussion in forums over the fact she was actually a girl. Not to mention that one famous case of a boy who was raised like a girl so that's why he dresses like a girl.

The term josou refers specifically to the act of men wearing female clothes, crossdressing. The word josou does not refer to the clothes themselves. And josou is even a suru verb, so that wouldn't make much sense either. For example:

Note that while some people may say the fine art of crossdressing doesn't refer merely to wearing female clothes, and requires a degree of acting, looks, etc, this is completely irrelevant here as the word josou is literally about the mere act of wearing female clothes.

 
josou still applies the same way it would in English. A male character which looks like a girl would be called <a></a>This is pretty obvious but, a crossdressing character doesn't necessarily look like a girl, even while crossdressing. A character who has made a ridiculous, failed attempt at crossdressing still has technically crossdressed, so the wordstill applies the same way it would in English. A male character which looks like a girl would be called <a href="http://www.japanesewithanime.com/2018/02/otokonoko-meaning.html">otokonoko 男の娘</a> instead.

Since the word josou 女装 is written with the kanji for "woman," it obviously can't apply to both genders crossdressing. It applies only to wearing "female clothes," and women wearing female clothes is just women wearing clothes. That's why its counterpart, dansou, also exists.

So the term josou 女装 is for crossdressing with female clothing, and dansou 男装 for crossdressing with male clothing, but what if want to just say "crossdressing" regardless of gender? Then there's the word iseisou 異性装.

 

The word iseisou 異性装 is exactly like josou and dansou, but in its case the clothes are isei's. And isei 異性 means "different gender," (this is the same i 異 as isekai 異世界, by the way). So iseisou means literally "(the act of wearing) different gender clothes."

Do Traps Have Boobs?</h2>

One of the most philosophical questions of our times is whether or not traps have boobs. That is, whether a character, or a person, who has undergone a hormone therapy of sorts, or surgery, and does have boobs, is still considered a trap, or labelled by a different transgender term.

 

The reason for this question is pretty simple: in anime, traps, otokonoko, do not have boobs, hence you'd think they shouldn't have them. But the word "trap" only implies you have to mistakenly guess the wrong sex. Certainly, a trap with boobs is easier to mistake for a woman than one without, so boobs couldn't be forbidden things for traps to have, could them?

 

The answer to this lies in statistics.

 

In anime, most characters are in school, they are young, sometimes middle or elementary school children. It wouldn't make any damn sense for any of these characters to have a huge pair of...

 

...uh...

 
<a></a>male character to have boobs in this case, given that there's no way they'd have undergone any boob-growing procedure....actually that <a href="http://www.japanesewithanime.com/2018/01/types-loli-shota.html#oppai-loli-meaning">does happen</a> ... so... *ahem*. Anyway, it wouldn't make sense for acharacter to have boobs in this case, given that there's no way they'd have undergone any boob-growing procedure.
 

The average otokonoko character constantly denies he is a girl, reaffirming every day he is actually (identifies as) a boy, so there's little chance he would even be willing to become a girl in first place. There are even cases of otokonoko characters who have done the impossible to get rid of their natural femininity and become manly men. So there's no way a booby trap would ever happen in anime.

 

So that's why traps do not have boobs, in anime. Due to coincidence. There's nothing that says traps can not have boobs, ergo traps can have boobs, it just doesn't happen, in anime.

Are Traps Gay?</h2>

Are traps gay? That's an over-generalization. Traps are not gay, wait, that's an over-generalization, too. Okay, some traps are gay, some traps are not gay. It varies. It depends on the trap in question.

I can't recall a single character in a gay or lesbian relationship in anime (except forandanime, but those don't count since the homosexual relationship is literally the main point of the story). I totally forgot about it, but the so-called math genius Enshuu Ritsu 円修 律 from the anime R-15 is probably gay. So, fine, geez, there's, like, one, single, (maybe) gay character, in the entirety of the average anime universe. But that hardly means anything. 
 
Also, there seems to be a gay character in Cardcaptor Sakura, but that still doesn't mean anything. 
 
Anyway, it'd be wrong to assume a character is gay just because he looks like a girl, or just because, for some reason, he frequently ends up in queer situations where he has to crossdress. There are cases of characters in anime, like Kuranosuke, from Kuragehime, whose hobby is literally crossdressing, and yet they aren't gay. So one thing doesn't equal the other.

In some words, like oyako 親子, "parent and child," the kanji for "daughter," musume 娘, may replace the kanji for "child" to indicate it's a female child we're talking about. Since we're only replacing the kanji, the word remains the same, see: oyako 親娘, "parent and daughter."

By the way, since "trap" otokonoko 男の娘 is literally pronounced the same way as "boy" otokonoko 男の子, it can be confusing to use it in a conversation, so sometimes people pronounce it (out loud) as otokonomusume 男の娘 instead to disambiguate. In writing the kanji is different so it doesn't matter if you read them the same.

However, turns out the world of anime is broader than we thought.

 

There is, actually, one time a futanari character was warranted. And that was the single, singlest, singlemost time, ever. And I don't think it will ever happen again.

 

That time was in Maze☆Bakunetsu Jikuu MAZE☆爆熱時空, where Mill is a futanari princess. Now, if you're wondering what in the actual fuck could have possibly happened to make a futanari character necessary, the answer is simple: the protagonist, Maze, is a girl, by day, who turns into a guy, by night. So the "hero," Maze, is a gender-switcher, and the "heroine," Mill, is a futanari in love with both male Maze and female Maze, and with the sexual capabilities to match both. Truly, this is most perfect couple ever! Inconceivable!

 

Ironically, this is only true in the manga (and probably in the novel, too). Because they butchered this lone gem of perfection in the anime adaptation by making Mill female instead.

Does Futanari Make You Gay?</h2>

It's a prevailing question, a doubt, in the minds of many people, regarding whether or not futanari makes you gay.

 

Logically speaking, futanari is not gay. There are two theories that undeniably prove this:

Origin of The Word</h2>

Unfortunately, the word futanari comes from some very, very ancient Japanese. Like, from a thousand years ago. So it's not very interesting to know where it came from, as it has little to do with manga or anime, and it's more like... there just was this word since ever.

 

In the "Heian period," or Heian jidai 平安時代, which was from years 794 to 1185 in the Gregorian calendar, the term futanari 二形 was used to describe an intersex person. Since then, the term has been loosely used to describe a number of ambiguous sex situations and people in a number of ways.

 

However, ever since it started being used in manga and doujinshi (1990 onward), the term futanari has become associated with the 2D world instead of the real life. This is pretty much because a futanari character in 2D happens obviously more often than a real-life intersex futanari person.

In this board, there was once a game-related thread entitled "kyaa" moeru himei no geemu "an'" 【きゃあっ】萌える悲鳴のゲーム【あんっ】, which was a scream, kyah!, followed by the phrase "games with screams you like" (see moe for the verb moeru), and ending with a moan, "ahn!"

 

 

In this thread, users talked about games where the voice actors, the characters screamed in pain and discomfort, and it might have sounded like moans of pleasure instead.

 

Then the 652th post drops this bomb:

 

バイオやＲＰＧなどで喘ぎ声をあげながら死んでいく光景で 

自慰する行為を猟奇オナニーと命名する

Note: baio バイオ is short for baiohazaado バイオハザード, the Japanese name for Resident Evil. This "seeking the bizarre" thing, ryouki, is about abnormal things. In this case, the post meant that masturbating to horror games is abnormal, not that the games they were masturbating to contained anything abnormal.

 

The next post, 653, says this ryouki onanii is a bit too dark. 654 says that's a given since you're masturbating to someone dying. Asking if the "final answer" is going to be that masturbating to screams is himei onanii and to characters dying ryouki onanii.

 

657 decides to abbreviate the term that was created just 5 posts before, saying ryonanii リョナニー should be the abbreviation of ryouki onanii.

 

Since onanii suru オナニーする means "to masturbate," then "to masturbate to [characters] dying" would be ryonanii suru リョナニーする, I guess. But, instead, people made it a -ru verb: ryonaru リョナる. So ryonatteru リョナってる would be the conjugation meaning "ryona'ing" or something.

 

Finally, people started saying just ryona リョナ as a noun. How much the term changed between its original extremely fucked up definition as ryouki onanii until then I don't know. But, as of today, the term ryona doesn't refer the act of masturbation itself, but to the content.
